| Apps That Prevent You From Texting behind the Wheel Posted: 27 Dec 2012 08:57 AM PST Smartphones are truly amazing devices. It wasn’t that long ago that you were probably blown away by making a phone call without a pocket full of quarters. Now you can trade stocks, buy a car, watch your favorite movies or even meet your potential husband or wife all with those little mobile computers. We’ve become so reliant on smartphones that we now often don’t leave the house without them. And they are certainly useful. Texting has become the new shorthand, allowing people to make plans in silence. However, there is a dark side. Smartphones and texting have led to an epidemic of accidents due to distracted driving. More than 6,000 people die each year due to distracted driving accidents, and upwards of 500,000 are injured, many of them permanently. That’s a major side effect for something as generally unimportant as writing or reading a text message. But when that little device beeps and blinks it’s ever so tempting to pick it up. Luckily, smartphone programmers are working to help you remove that temptation. Here are just a few of the quality apps out there to help prevent you from texting behind the wheel. First of all, check out Text-STAR. This app isn’t any sort of punishment for texting, but simply a helpful tool to get you from point A to point B safely and without distraction. You’ll leave it on all the time, and once your car hits 10 mph and exceeds it, Text-STAR will put a freeze on text messaging. You can set up auto-replies for incoming messages, so people will know you are temporarily unavailable if you are waiting for an important notice. Want to turn your push to avoid texting into a way to actually improve your driving skills? Then check out DriveScribe. This app you’ll switch on as soon as you get behind the wheel, and it will rate your driving based on how closely you obey the traffic laws and the speed limits. It works on a points system, and as you hit certain totals you’ll actually receive discounts or gift cards at well-known retailers. It’s a great way to save money for doing something you want to be doing anyway, as well as a way to incentivize any new drivers in the family to learn proper driving methods. You can check out full data about your drive after its over, including your average speed, distance covered, a full map of the route you took and a breakdown of any instances when you bent the law. If you simply don’t trust yourself and want to take all of the thinking out of it, check out the apps Textecution and AT&T DriveMode. Textecution works off of GPS, and much like Text-STAR will lock your texting once you hit 10 mph. This one has the added feature of adjustments for mass transit, so you won’t be cut off if you’re speeding along on a bus, train or subway. DriveMode simply and efficiently cuts you off. Once you launch the app the phone will continue to receive emails, calls and texts, but any alert tones will be silenced. That way you truly won’t be distracted by anything. And if you simply can’t keep your hands off the phone, you’ll find that you are locked out of typing anything as well. You can set the phone to allow calls to and from five different phone numbers as well as the local emergency service, so you will have flexibility when you absolutely need it. And don’t worry, you’ll still be able to access your 20GB of music. If you’re in the market for a new insurance policy from Cheapcarinsurance.net or any of the other listing sites, look into discounts for using these apps. Just as you often receive lower monthly rates for a good driving record, some companies may be willing to reward you for this level of diligence. © 2011 TipsBlogger.com | Home | Contact | Submit Guest Post | |
