There’s all of the old school classics that continue to be reinvented with new packaging and designs on a yearly basis. Then there’s the new classics that outsell everything. And then you’ll find the technology based games that so easily capture a toddler’s imagination. If you have an iPad, there are literally thousands of apps that are perfect for kids. With all of the customer reviews available you’ll also easily be able to tell what’s quality and what needs a bit more beta testing before it’s ready for your kids. But if you don’t want to take the time to hunt through all of those releases in the iOS app store, here’s a quick look at five of the best educational and entertaining iPad apps for toddlers. First on the list is a really cool app called What’s the Difference? This one is great because it can scale up based on your child’s age. It’s good for anyone two and up, and before you know it you’ll find yourself playing it when your little one finally goes down for a nap. It’s a simple premise, with images placed next to each other that are nearly identical. Each image has about five elements that separate them, and all you do is try to find as many as possible before the clock ticks down to zero. Because it is image based you don’t have to worry about your child’s reading level either. Next on the list is Tangram XL. This is a really cool one because it’s a digital version of a classic game that you may well remember playing as a child. You basically pick and choose from a bunch of shapes, and then turn those shapes into pictures. It’s not terribly complicated, and will help your child recognize how different pictures are created from their various simple foundations. Just keep in mind that some of the levels may be too complex for toddlers. Make sure you get them started with the simple ones so they don’t lose interest. If you’ve got a toddler that’s fairly advanced educationally, check out Math Magic. This is basically the next generation of math flashcards, and it makes the process far more exciting. Math Magic turns division, addition and subtraction tasks into a game, and you can scale it for kids in kindergarden all the way up to third grade. And best of all, you’ll never suffer from an incomplete set of flash cards again. On the lower end of the scale is the RedFish release called C is for Cake. This is for the youngsters who haven’t started full days of school yet. The goal here is to understand the various ingredients needed to bake a cake. It’s an easy puzzle game that will help build hand/eye coordination, and should definitely appeal to a little one who has a bit of a sweet tooth. It’s also a beautiful app, with fantastic colors and a simple yet compelling design. Finally, check out Star Walk. This app actually won Apple’s design award, and although the $5 price tag might turn you off at first you’ll find the app is more than worth that investment. This app is absolutely gorgeous. You enter in your geographic information and it creates the star scape right above the baby play yard around the corner your toddler is beginning to grow out of. Your child will love the star tour this app lays out, helping him gain an understanding and hopefully a passion for the night sky. |
