Productivity Apps

Like it or not, applications or apps now play a major part in our everyday lives. With hundreds of thousands to choose from, it can be a confusing and time consuming undertaking to find what you need and then to decide whether an app is suitable, simple to use and clear to understand.

Productivity apps are used to enhance and simplify daily life by using software programs, for example; word processing, digital text documents, spreadsheets, databases and presentation documents. These applications run on computers, mobile phones and tablets via their operating systems and can assist with essential day to day activities, leaving more time for the things we enjoy.

Amy Harris, Community Manager for Franking Machine Experts, offers the five best productivity apps for 2014.

Top 5 Applications

1. Evernote
Evernote is a free app, providing a vast range of products to assist in many different ways. Whatever operating system you are using, Evernote will remember favourite web sites visited, synchronize images and files of things you like (by taking a simple photo and audio recording), collate and collect information, share notes and file information with friends and colleagues and even plan a trip.

Within Evernote you can also download ‘Skitch’, a photo based app where a snap is taken, annotated and then shared with colleagues and friends for feedback and comments. Evernote Web Clipper is a more specific download for saving and sharing interests.

Evernote Hello allows you to enter an email address or business card to synchronize with Facebook and other groups. Evernote Food lets you create a recipe folder, save favourite restaurants and to discover food around you and then to share this information.

Evernote Peek uses your own study material to quiz or help you to brush up on skills or languages you may be studying by using a virtual smart cover to hide and reveal information.

Finally, using Evernote Clearly reduces the amount of unrequired information on a webpage. You can also change fonts and save pages to make webpages more reader friendly.

2. Google Drive & Quickoffice
Google Drive and Quickoffice for PC, android and iOS allows you to upload photos, files, recipes, presentations and spreadsheets enabling sharing, editing and the creation of documents, slides and sheets wherever you are.

By using the same Google account users can access and amend documents that have been created by any Microsoft Powerpoint, Word and spreadsheet packages. Quickoffice is used alongside Google Drive and gives 15 GB of free space to upload photos, Gmail and Google Drive documents.

3. CloudOn
CloudOn is available to download free for iOS, Android and web browsers. Using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel on your PC, tablet or smartphone, you can create documents and presentations. These can then be reviewed, edited and shared through CloudOn.

Using Excel, formulas and formatting can be amended from any device. Most file types can be opened, managed, deleted or renamed.

CloudOn Pro is a chargeable extension to CloudOn and offers extra features like tracking changes in shared documents, filtering data and inserting tables in Microsoft Excel documents and presentation mode and SmartArt with Microsoft PowerPoint, though most users will be more than pleased with the free version of this app.

4. Pocket
This is another free downloadable app. It works by saving (or Pocketing) information via your web browser, email or many other apps you may use. When you are out and about the information saved can be accessed on your tablet, ipad or mobile phone.

By tagging whatever you would like to place in Pocket means easy access and easy sharing with friends and colleagues.

5. Any.Do & Cal
Any.Do & Cal are calendar and to-do based applications designed to synchronize lists, meetings and diary dates into calendar format. They are downloadable for iOS and Android systems and can convert all your current calendar events into the app.

Gmail information can be converted into Any.Do Cal at the touch of a button. For PC browsers you would need to use Chrome to enable synchronization. Any.Do will be introducing a Mail and also a Memo application in the near future.

Which Apps are Right for Me?
When looking for productivity apps think about what packages and systems you, your friends and colleagues are already using. This will ensure you download the best and most suitable one for your needs. What may seem like similar applications may not necessarily support all the data or word processing packages you use.
